Project Ideas

  • Measure the temperature, depth that light penetrates/turbidity of water

Locations

East Coast

One idea the group had was to travel to the east coast and drop our Arduinos in the Atlantic. Someone threw out the idea that we could go on a whale-watching trip to get out into the water:

  • New England Aquarium Trips: "Up-Close with Whales Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. (Boston, MA) May 17, 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Contact Family Programs at kids.ed@neaq.org or 617-226-2149 for additional information. Please call Central Reservations at 617-973-5206 to reserve your space. A $2 service fee will be added to each ticket."
  • The Aquarium also offers other Whale Watches. See this page.
  • So does Boston Harbor Cruises. See here.

I (Angela) am more familiar with the South Shore these days than the North Shore, but I know there are dozens of beaches and smaller harbors to the north and south of Boston that might be easier to obtain permission from or find a place to anchor our project for, for a week or whatever, than Boston Proper might be. To the south: Hingham beach and Hingham Harbor, Nantasket Beach in Hull, Wollaston Beach in Quincy/Quincy Harbor, Scituate, and Marshfield, etc. To the north: Revere Beach, Nahant Beach in Lynn, Gloucester, Salem, etc.

Burlington, VT

Lake Champlain has ferries which will take us out into the water:

Bennington Area

If we decide to use a river or lake in the Bennington area then it will be easy to consult the maps in Student Life (specifically with the Outing Club) to find our ideal location.
