Talk:Environmental Initiatives Committee
From BenningtonWiki
10/7/09 Hey Guys! We're going to start using the Wiki to keep track of what we'd like to get done BEFORE the next meeting, and what the schedule for the next meeting will be.
For example, for 10/14/09 meeting: We decided we should use the remainder of the term to brainstorm and solidify a composting system, and then implement it spring semester. So, lets do some research before next time:
research compost systems in dining halls do other schools have? what kind of compost system could we experiment with have? aerated with tubes? in turnable compost vessels? research compost vessels, (one that can be turned?)
AND the schedule for next time will be as follows:
Reports of outside meetings- if anyone had a meeting outside of EIC, (SSJ or Bennington Sustainable Food Project or any meetings with faculty) Introduction of any newcomers- what are you interested in? Break down in to groups focusing on compost and food Report back Event planning- future potlucks? hikes?
Great, we'll see you all on wednesday 10/14/09!
-Claire and Mara
10/21/09 Hey Guys!
TONIGHT we discussed
Outside Meetings:
Bennington Sustainable Food Project BSFP met with Bill Scully to: To develop a baseline understanding of the dining hall budget How much local and organic we buy now Possibility of sourcing more
Bill was not able to give concrete numbers, mostly because breakdown in spending is hard to pinpoint right now, and the budget reports he receives are confidential. He needs to speak with Bill Morgan to show us an actual document. With support and interest from the dining hall, we are now in a great position to begin talking with local farms about working with Bennington College. EIC and Bennington Sustainable Food Project members are all invited to participate in farm trips.
Bike Program Shane talked about a bike rack with between 5-10 donated bikes set up at Crossett. There would be keys with barcodes that students could check out like a library book. Fines would be high to prevent students taking bikes for a long period of time.
Events:
Long Meadow 7PM pot luck dinner to celebrate 350 (acceptable ppm of carbon) on Saturday 10/24 -we'll table from 11:30 to 1 in down commons with a sign up sheet for dishes -we'll make flyers to put up around campus -at the party we'll film some kind of youtube video to publicize 350 -maybe we can convince wooley potluck to join forces with us
Hunger Banquet -should we help set up? -possibility of a Water Banquet sponsored by EIC, either with Hunger Banquet or on a different night
NEXT WEEK
we'll follow the same schedule
report of outside meetings intro to new members split in to groups to discuss compost and food groups report back event planning
