Science and Math Student Activities

On Monday, November 24th at 1pm in Dickinson 225, Wes Bernegger, a senior in Biology, will be presenting his Thesis on The effects of Human Generated Noise on the Foraging Ability of the Bluntnose Minnow. Bluntnose Minnow is a type of fish found in temperate freshwater.There will yummy desserts too!

Science and Math Student Gathering
Science Workshop, November 14th Dory Dawson, a senior in Biology will be presenting her thesis. This will be a great opportunity to see what other students have done during their stay at Bennington.

Do you want to be part of the Student Educational Policies Committee (SEPC)? SEPC is looking for a Science and Math Discipline Representative. If you are interested, contact Tambu at tkudze@bennington.edu or Cathy McGath at CMcGath@bennington.edu for more information.


Our next Science and Math Student Gathering is this Thursday, November 6th at 7pm in the Dickinson Reading Room. There will be a discussion on registering for classes in the sciences. Come and hear (share) experiences from students who have taken classes you might be considering to take next Spring. We will also talk more about Summer and FWT opportunities.

A Phytochemist will be giving a presentation. Phytochemistry involves the study of the processes, chemistry and products of plants. Come and learn more about phytochemistry.


The Origin of Numbers Ever wonder about numbers? Think arithmetic is simple? This talk is for you! Reid Ginoza will be speaking on the origin of numbers and on how they evolved into what we know and love today.

It's not too late to let Reid or Tambu know that you're interested in contacting with and interviewing science and math alumni! Those that have already signed up will receive information by the end of October.

Thank you for coming to the Science and Math Student Gathering. Here's a recap of the meeting: Among other things, we had a great conversation about preparing to work independently in the sciences and how to take advantage of resources outside of the classroom. Later, we decided to take up the faculty's offer to invite a guest speaker of our choice in the spring term. Lastly, to help build their professional network, those interested will be provided the name and contact information of recent alumni who work in your area of interest.

If you'd like to learn more about any of these topics, please contact your Discipline Representatives Tambu and Reid. Look for announcements about the next gathering in a month.

Statistics Discussion
Interested in statistics taught here either next term or in a later year? There will be a discussion with math faculty Andrew McIntyre on statistics taught here and what you can get out of the courses. This is open to everyone, but social science and natural science students and anyone working with experimental design are especially encouraged to come. Please feel free to bring your questions, concerns, etc.

On Monday, October 27th, in Dickinson 148, Lisa Rattray from the Nicholas school of the Environment at Duke University will give a presentation/information session on graduate studies at Duke. Nicholas school is one of the best in Environmental studies in the US, come and learn more.

Monthly Science and Math Student Gathering!

At the new monthly Science and Math Student Gathering, you will get to know fellow math and science students as well as discuss issues relevant to the science and math community at Bennington. All are welcome: those concerned about finding a science FWT, those who have a really cool research project that they'd like help with, and freshmen who are curious about science at Bennington.

Dr. Barrie Rabinowitz Cassileth ’59 Lecture
Barrie R. Cassileth, Ph.D., is chief of integrative medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and founding president of the International Society for Integrative Oncology. As a researcher, educator, and planner, Dr. Cassileth has worked in alternative and complementary (integrative) medicine and psychosocial aspects of cancer care for close to 30 years.

Science Workshop this week is on Health Policy, featuring Dr. Richard Cooper, Professor of Medicine in the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Barrie Cassileth '59, Chief of Integrative Medicine at Sloan-Kettering Memorial Cancer Center.

Note the change in location! For this week, workshop has moved to the UpCafe. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
