[edit] Frequently Asked Questions
When I try to compose a message in WebMail, I get a red X where the window should be. What's wrong?
You get this error in WebMail when you have Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 7, due to a change in how Vista handles activex controls. Until the updates flow down to fix this, you can use the Mozilla FireFox browser, which is available at http://www.mozilla.org and it will work fine.
If you have Windows XP, Go to the Options button in Webmail and scroll down to the email security section. Click the download or upgrade button, and run the S/MIME update. Exit and restart IE7.
How do I set up my Bennington email address?
Go to http://register.bennington.edu , you will need the ID number on your Bennington ID card in order to register. Click the link below the login boxes to create a new account. You can then check your email at http://webmail.bennington.edu. (webmail is also now linked from the Bennington College website).
I've been attempting to set up my Bennington email account, but it keeps rejecting my password. Why is it so difficult?
Your password is your gateway to your Bennington College computer account and as such may eventually allow you access to your grades and other sensitive information. The security of any system, like a chain and its links, is only as secure as its weakest password. This is why we require that it pass this security check.
What are those rules about passwords again?
Passwords must be longer than six characters, contain 3 of the 4 character types (lowercase letters, uppercase letters, numbers, symbols), may not be derived from the username or from a word in the English dictionary.
I would like to to check my email from an email program like Outlook Express or Apple Mail. Is this possible?
Yes, just set it up as a pop account. The pop server name is webmail.bennington.edu and the smtp server name is also webmail.bennington.edu (when on campus). If you are off of the campus network (like at home), you need to use the smtp server of the ISP you are using.
How do I redirect my Bennington email?
Just return to http://register.bennington.edu, log in with your username and password, and change your mail mode from Bennington College email to External Mail Account, and specify the email you want to use.
This will remove your mail box on the Bennington server and automatically send email sent to your bennington.edu address to your external address. Big caveat is that any mail currently in your mailbox will be removed. You will also not be able to access your email via webmail.
Occasionally, the free email services will pick up the forwarded mail as spam and either put it in a spam folder or delete it without notice.
What if I want to change the email address that my Bennington email is redirected to?
Login with your username at http://register.bennington.edu and change the external email address. Please sure to hit the apply button at the bottom of the page. Call Charlotte Welch at x4479 if you have any problem with this.
Everytime I go to the Bennington webmail site, I get this message: HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error
You are getting this message because you are redirecting your email to another email address. This means you don't actually have a mail box on the webmail server - if you want to send and receive email here, you need to go to http://register.bennington.edu, login, and select "Bennington College Mailbox" from the "Mail Mode:" drop down menu. Click on "apply settings" and your mailbox will created on the server.
I'm not getting my bennington.edu email that I have redirected to my yahoo.com account.
Yahoo is probably putting the mail in your "bulk mail" folder. You can pull up one of the messages in your bulk mail folder and click the "Not spam" button at the bottom. Select "move message that I flag as not spam to the inbox", and clik on the "mark messages as not spam". This will train your yahoo that this is good mail and you will then get the college messages.
How do I print double-sided on the laser printer?
Windows users: Go to File > Print. In the "Finishing" tab, check "Print on Both Sides".
Macintosh users: Go to File > Print. In "Copies and Pages" (the 3rd drop box), select "Layout" and check "Long-edge Binding" under Two-Sided Printing.
