Final Proposal

For my final project I want to explore the commonly acknowledged and rarely acted on fact that we, as Bennington students, are embarrassingly unaware of global and even national events outside of our campus, often out of sheer neglect or lack of desire to remain uninformed. Media surrounds us every day- our student houses each receive the New York Times 3x/week, and we each spend hours a day on the internet. Yet most of us remain blissfully unaware of much of what is going on in the world, and our art reflects our insulation. The media is there, and we look at it and interact with it.. what we see in it somehow remains surprising selective. All we have to do to stay informed is redirect our web browsers from Facebook to the news, and we don't. It is my frustration with this that I want to convey in this piece.

My idea is to have a screen (or video projection) playing back global news (primarily of major recent events), along with speakers projecting the associated audio throughout the space. However, neither will be identifiable through heavy Max/MSP/Jitter processing. At one side of the screen will be a pair of headphones, whose place in their holder also serves as a switch. When the headphones are removed from their holster (and presumably put on), the video will begin to clarify, and the headphones will play unprocessed audio. Both of these effects will "crossfade" into clarity. Therefor, all the user has to do (like the Bennington student) is to make the conscious decision to engage with and explore the media, and the world will be right in front of them. As long as they choose not to engage, the media remains there, and remains consumed in some form, but the meaning and content are avoided.

I would like the processing to be dependent on obvious user actions or interactions. In other words, I want the user to be able to clearly "play" with the effected audio and video, thereby providing a distraction from the content/true "aim" of the piece (to put on the headphones), in much the same way Facebook distracts us from ever navigating over to the New York Times (as an example) website. There will be a series of PIR sensors placed throughout the space, each serving as a switch that will trigger an obvious change in the A/V processing. As the user moves through the space, they will realize that their movement is affecting the processing, which may occupy them enough to distract them from discovering the headphones.

Bought a Focusrite Pro 24 interface.. will be good to have for my senior show anyway.
Reserved Mac Mini and Projector for Digital Arts for last week of term.
Have decided on PIR sensors to affect processed A/V. Updated Project proposal accordingly. Tim has 4 Parallax Model A PIRs.
Have a pair of headphones (see pic). Will use copper tape for the circuit.
Have been approved to install in Jennings room 308.
Due to the small space, my Logitech 2.1 speaker setup should be quite satisfactory.
Have begun collecting and editing footage. For simplicity and clarity's sake have limited the scope to the conflict in Syria. Using primarily cell phone and other local non-major-media sources.
Due to lack of ability to modify the space at all (no nails, screws, paint, glue, etc). I have to be creative about installation.
Piano bench on top of the piano makes a good spot to "hang" the projector. I'll put a cloth over it and hide the other electronics underneath.
Will have to acquire sticky-tac to mount PIR sensors to walls. I can hide all the cables under the carpet.
A few options of where to hang headphones... will need 1/8" extension cable though.
